Of course nowadays we call a giraffe a 长颈鹿. But I think mentioning giraffe is useful for historical context, and also in case someone is reading or referring to an old text. And for whatever it's worth, 麒麟 is preserved in Japanese as giraffe... though I can't imagine anyone would write 麒麟, they would just write きりん.
